The 2018 season of the Indian Premier League, also known as IPL 11, was the eleventh season of the IPL, a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the BCCI in 2007. The season, which is being held from 7 April to 27 May, saw the return of the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals after serving two years of suspension for the involvement of their respective owners in the 2013 IPL betting case. Star Sports purchased the media rights at ₹16,347.5 crore ($2.55 billion) for five years starting from 2018.^[1]

Chennai Super Kings won by 8 wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to win their third title. Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson won the Orange Cap for the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 735 runs. Andrew Tye, of Kings XI Punjab, was awarded the Purple Cap for finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 24 wickets. Sunil Narine of Kolkata Knight Riders was named Most Valuable Player, also known as Man of the Series, while Rishabh Pant of Delhi Daredevils was named the Emerging Player of the Tournament.

Format

Eight teams are scheduled to play in 2018. The tournament involves each team playing every other team twice in a home-and-away, double round-robin format. At the conclusion of the double round-robin league, the top four teams on the basis of aggregate points qualify for the playoffs. In this stage, the top two teams compete with each other (in a match titled "Qualifier 1"), as do the remaining two teams (in a match titled "Eliminator"). While the winner of Qualifier 1 directly qualifies for the final match, the losing team gets another chance to qualify for the final match by playing the winning team of the Eliminator match; this match is titled Qualifier 2. The winner of this subsequent Qualifier 2 match moves onto the final match. The team that wins the final match is crowned the Indian Premier League winners.The schedule for the tournament was published on 14 February 2018.^[5]

Broadcast

Star Sports won the global media rights at ₹16,347.5 crore ($2.55 billion) for five years starting from 2018.^[1] In India, the tournament will be broadcast on Star Network channels in six languages (English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali).^[6] For the first time, IPL would also be broadcast on public broadcaster Doordarshan.^[7] The television rights for rest of the world were won by Willow TV for US and Canada, Sky Sports for UK, Fox Sports for Australia, Sky Sport for New Zealand, SuperSport for sub Saharan Africa, beIN Sportsfor Middle-East and North America, Flow TV for Caribbean, Geo Super for Pakistan, Channel 9 for Bangladesh and Lemar TV for Afghanistan.^[6] The radio rights were won by Cricket Radio globally (except Indian subcontinent), 89.1 Radio 4 FM and Gold 101.3 FM for US and Talksport for UK.^[6] Star's digital platform Hotstar held the digital rights for India, US and Canada. The digital rights for rest of the world were won by Sky Sports for UK, Fox Sports for Australia, Sky Sport for New Zealand, SuperSport for sub Saharan Africa, beIN Sports for Middle-East and North America, Flow TV for Caribbean, Geo Super for Pakistan, Channel 9 for Bangladesh and YuppTV for Australia, Europe, SE Asia & South America.^[6] Star India also announced its plan to broadcast IPL in Virtual Reality.^[8]

Venues

Per the original schedule, all teams except for Kings XI Punjab, would play their home games at their traditional home venues. Kings XI were scheduled to play three of their home games in Indore and the other four games in Mohali.^[5] The schedule was later changed due to logistical issues owing to the temporary closure of Chandigarh Airport, and as a result, Kings XI would play three of their home games in Mohali and the other four games in Indore making an exception to the rule of playing at least four home matches at their designated home venue.^[9] The IPL matches in Chennai were threatened due to the Kaveri water dispute protests.^[10] The Madras High Court issued a notice to BCCI after a PIL was filed seeking a stay on the IPL matches in Chennai.^[11] On 11 April that Chennai's six remaining home matches would be held in Pune instead due to security concerns resulting from the protests.^[12]

Ten venues were selected to host the matches. The opening match and the final will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The venues for the two playoffs were not announced initially due to the norm of allotting the Eliminator and second qualifier to the home stadium of last season's runner-up, and the fact that the 2017 runner-up, Rising Pune Supergiant were no longer a part of the IPL. ^[13] Later, both playoffs were allotted to Pune but after the venue of Chennai Super Kings was moved there, the matches were shifted to Kolkata.^[14][15]

Coming back to scandal

Indian police have arrested three men suspected of placing illegal bets on Indian Premier League matches as authorities crack down on gambling rackets that emerge around the billion-dollar franchise every year.

The trio were accused of running an online betting syndicate from a residence in New Delhi. Nearly all gambling is illegal in India but is still a huge underground industry.

"We arrested the three on Saturday while they were betting during the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils match," Youdhbir Singh, a senior police officer in Delhi, told AFP on Tuesday.

"They were insisting that they are first-timers and it was just a one-off incident, but we know that they were doing it since the start of the league on April 7."

Eleven mobile phones, a laptop, a television set and a digital channel receiver were seized, Youdhbir added.

Media reports say police have busted other syndicates, in the southern city of Hyderabad and the eastern state of West Bengal, in the first two weeks of the 11th season of the lucrative IPL franchise.

A few balls earlier, when Buttler's shot landed in no man's zone.. dhoni was FURIOUS / ACTING FURIOUS over boundry fielders, even though it was not their catch, but he didn't raise an eyebrow on Watson's lazy fielding attempt or Bravo's mistake.

And before all this…Dhoni dropped an easy keeper’s catch of Buttler in penultimate over if i am not wrong.

Oh yes,Obviously it was. Don’t you know the whole IPL is fixed.

• There are a thousand people as players, coaches, physios and what not not in the IPL.
• A few owners.
• Thousands of people working as broadcasters, producers, commentators etc.
• Thousands of people employed in BCCI.
• Perhaps a hundred or so in the ICC.
• And yea, thousands of journalists, reporters etc. (Whose job is, in a way, to find some scandal; a big news)

And yet none of these many thousand people say anything about the big ‘fixed' scandal that the IPL is. For what? Money? I know humans are bad but they aren't this bad. I mean no one says anything? Seriously?

And what about the players, these guys have dreamt of being cricketers since their childhood. They love the sport. Like Kevin Pietersen said “I care about cricket.” I mean cricket is being held like WWE and none of these people are worried because of it.

Weird, right?

So, here's my counter question:

When the IPL is fixed and no coach, player, etc has a problem with it,then isn't International cricket also fixed?

Actor Arbaaz Khan Summoned In Connection To IPL Betting Case

Salman Khan's brother and Bollywood Actor, Producer Arbaaz Khan has been summoned by the Thane Police station for his alleged link in Indian Premier League (IPL) betting scandal.

The Thane police has asked Arbaaz to visit them for questioning for his alleged links to bookie Sonu Jalan. The sources claim that Arbaaz and Sonu have been in contact, and the bookie helped the actor in betting.

The investigative officer in this case, Pradip Sharma has submitted his preliminary report to Thane CP.

A couple of days back, India's topmost bookie Sonu Jalan was arrested by the Thane police's extortion cell. In his questioning, it was revealed that Arbaaz would place bets on IPL matches through Sonu, and the duo were in regular contact. It is also reported that the Bollywood celebrity suffered major loss in betting.

Sources have revealed that many other Bollywood celebrities were in contact with the bookie, and earned a huge amount of money by placing bets on the T20 tournament. The actor will have to present himself to police for questioning. 

The Police have claimed that Sonu has put forward many allegations against Arbaaz, but no comment can be given till they question the actor himself. Though, the officials have seized a diary from Sonu's house, which had the numbers of top 50 bookies around the world.

Arguably the biggest revelation coming from arrest of the bookie is that his punters had fixed two cricket matches held in the subcontinent in 2016.

Sonu also has had connections with the 'D-company', headed by terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. He is reported to have earned Rs 500 crore from betting in IPL 2018.

This is another major scandal to hit cricket, following the match-fixing claims brought out by Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera, through a sting operation, has shook the cricketing world, by showing video evidence of fixing taking place for Sri Lanka's Test against Australia in 2016, and against India in 2017 at Galle.

After actor-director-producer Arbaaz Khan admitted to have participated in IPL betting, another well-known Bollywood celebrity has been named in connection with cricket match betting.

Bookie Sonu Jalan, who has named Arbaaz, has now named director-producer Sajid Khan in the betting scandal. 

The bookie who is said to have links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has named the "Housefull" director and has informed the police of the director's involvement in betting, said ANI quoting police sources.

According to ANI, Jalan has said that Sajid Khan, brother of director Farah Khan, used to place bets on cricket matches around 7 years ago. Thane police is investigating into Sonu's claims. However, they have not decided to summon Sajid Khan for joining the investigation yet, reported ANI quoting Thane crime branch sources. 

Sajid has directed films like Heyy Babyy, Housefull, Himmatwala and Humshakals among others.

Arbaaz Khan, who was also named by Jalan in the IPL betting scandal, confessed to his participation in the betting. According to media reports, Arbaaz told police that he has known bookie Jalan since last six years and that he had bet in the 2016 IPL season.

Arbaaz had also been getting threats by bookie Jalan after the actor failed to pay Rs 3 crore that he had lost in betting to Sonu Jalan.

Arbaaz was summoned by the Thane Police on Friday after bookie Sonu Jalan aka Sonu Malad revealed his name to the Thane Police Anti-Extortion Cell. Thereafter, the actor promised to cooperate with the police, and admitted that he lost Rs 2.80 crores and he was unable to pay the money to Sonu Jalan. However, Arbaaz confirmed that he didn't place bets in the recently concluded IPL 2018.

As per reports, Arbaaz has now named seven other members from the film industry, who were introduced to Jalan by him. 

According to an indiatimes.com report, two more Bollywood producers have been summoned by the police. 

"Two Bollywood producers, Parag Sanghvi and Murad Khaitan’s names have cropped up. We will call them for questioning. Sanghvi was Jalan’s [Sonu Jalan] partner. A top bookie who is a Mumbai-based builder’s son, Dilip Ludhani, has also been named. We are probing further. We will call Khan again if needed," the report quoted a police officer as saying.
